The Loop at Xavier
The Loop applies four forms of Jesuit care to how Xavier approaches artificial intelligence.
Together, they ask AI to deepen learning, respect the whole person, strengthen self-knowledge, and serve a mission larger than the technology itself.
The four Curas give Xavier a practical standard for AI: protect the work of learning, preserve the dignity of persons and relationships, cultivate self-knowledge, and direct technology toward a shared mission.
Learning with AI should still require attention, effort, questions, and discernment. Fluency includes knowing when not to delegate the work.
“Educating people about the use of AI… involves teaching them to decide when and for what purpose it ought not to be used.”
AI can simulate empathy and conversation; it cannot become a human relationship. The Loop keeps teachers, peers, and responsibility present.
“It must be understood for what it is: a tool, not a person.”
The standard is not whether a system is impressive, but whether its use helps people grow in knowledge, freedom, relationship, and service.
“The challenge, therefore, is not technological, but anthropological.”
From conviction to practice
The Loop carries them into Xavier's AI strategy, programs, and public learning. Students can go deepest of all through the College of Arts and Sciences' B.A. in Artificial Intelligence.
